Maria is out of Roland Garros after losing to Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium in the quarter finals: 4-6 2-6.
Henin-Hardenne was in complete control against the misfiring Maria who was bidding for her first semi-final here.
Second seed Sharapova hung on gamely until 3-3 in the first set. Having surrendered the opener with a lame forehand her game disintegrated rapidly against the fluid Belgian.
Henin-Hardenne steamed two breaks clear in the second set and clinched victory as Sharapova fired a backhand long after one hour 27 minutes.
