Maria Sharapova has pulled out of next week's Acura Classic in San Diego, tournament organisers said on Thursday.
World number two Sharapova, who won Wimbledon in 2004, was forced out of the Acura Classic with a lower back injury.
The Russian teenager has not played since she was beaten by Venus Williams in the Wimbledon semi-finals.
“I am very disappointed to have to withdraw from the Acura Classic because of a lower back strain. The Acura Classic is a fantastic event with some of the best fans in the world. That is why it is one of the favorites among players and always has such a great field. I hope to recover as soon as possible and am looking forward to the opportunity to play the Acura Classic next year."
Maria's next tournament will be Los Angeles beginning on August 8th.
