Maria Sharapova pulled out of the Rogers Cup women's tennis tournament Sunday due to a strained chest muscle.
Sharapova, the top seed in the $1.3 million tournament, had hoped she'd be able to play at the Toronto event but after receiving treatment over the weekend she was advised not to hit any balls until Wednesday or Thursday.
The most popular player on the WTA Tour and the biggest draw of the Toronto event, Sharapova withdrew from her quarterfinal match at the JPMorgan Chase Open in California on Friday due to the injury.
"I'm glad that they didn't wait another day and continue to think about it and provide hope that it might have worked out," said tournament director Stacey Allaster. "I think it's better today to know. We move forward."
Her withdrawal means the seeds will be shuffled. The top eight have a bye in the first round.
