Shamil Tarpishchev, the president of the Russian Tennis Federation, has said his agency is in talks with Maria Sharapova’s representatives to arrange a tour of Russian cities for the player who recently became the first Russian to top the rankings in women’s tennis, the Lenta.Ru Web site reported.
“This year we are awaiting Sharapova in Moscow, to take part in the WTA Tour Championship, the Kremlin Cup. Talks are also on for her to hold several exhibition matches in Russia where she should also visit Khanty-Mansiisk, not far from where she was born. That could help boost the popularity of tennis,” Tarpishchev said.
He also pointed out that the Tennis Federation’s main goal was to foster new champions in all age groups so that Russia does not lose its strong position on the world arena.
