Maria Sharapova re-injured her right ankle in practice on Friday at Roland Garros, went to the doctor and after three hours got the good news – no fracture.
The very bad news is that despite requesting a Monday start, she was denied and now is scheduled to face Mashona Washington later on Sunday on Suzanne Lenglen. She’s not happy about it and there’s still a chance that she won’t play. Even if she does, she’s going to have a hard time moving and could have used another day to heal.
The tournament is taking a huge risk here by asking one of the tour’s top draws to play hurt, as Washington could counterpunch her out in the first round. But its clear that the French Tennis Federation wants to put on a very good show on its inaugural “First Sunday” of this now 15 day event.
