Most likely candidate to win Wimbledon?

Posted by: Marco

Top-ranked Maria Sharapova retired during the second set of her Pan Pacific Open semifinal against Ana Ivanovic on Saturday because of a hamstring injury.

After dropping the first set 6-1, the Russian star consulted with her trainer. She won the first game of the second set before retiring.

"It's disappointing to have to finish this way," Sharapova said. "I started to feel pain in the second game of the first set. I tried to go on, but you can't get away with it when you are playing against a top player."

Fifth-seeded Ivanovic of Serbia will face second-seeded Martina Hingis in the final on Sunday.

Hingis posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over defending champion Elena Dementieva of Russia.

Sharapova, who reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the WTA Tour rankings on Monday, lost to Serena Williams in the final of the Australian Open.

The Russian had 17 double-faults in her first match against Italy's Francesca Schiavone and double-faulted 14 times Friday in the quarterfinals against Japan's Ai Sugiyama. Sharapova refused to blame the injury on her schedule.

"I have a simple and easy schedule compared to the other girls," she said. "There's no doubt its difficult when you come straight from a Grand Slam. The surface here is quite different and the change in court might have something to do with it."

Sharapova said her trainer told her she would likely need about a week to recover.

"I didn't have pain like this during the Australian Open," added Sharapova. "This is like a sudden, sharper pain I felt when I landed on the serve."

In Saturday's second semifinal, Hingis raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first set.

There had to be something going on underlying your serving problems. Perhaps this even explains in part your performance beginning with Serena. Recover soon.

It plays as if it wanted to end the party after beginning . Only sonrie when already it does not play. It does not suffer too much while it plays?I seems that it is required so much that it ends up by playing against yes same. Every ball looks like the end(fín) of the world.O-O-O-O-O-

Okay Maria! - a hamstring injury - good luck, but remember: You are no. # 1 (WTA), but its only because of your great final 2006 with 5 titles - incl. US Open. Today I only will rank you between 10 - 16. Sorry. Also sorry for your many sponsor´s. Take a break for three/four weeks and try to come/get back at the top again. We´ all hope so. One more time: Very good luck - but relax until you are fit again.....:'(

maria must take advantage of this rest to think. It is the nomber one of the world, O.K. Pero should dominate more the "tempo" of the game and be a "killer" in the net. From Barcelona(Spain?) regards. I sit it for my terrible English.

It hurts every time you lose, and you haven´t won a BIG tournament since US Open. Take a break (30 days) and get back (100 pct.). Forget your position as no. # 1 right now. Its better to serve right (1st serve and def. the other players in two set. Haven´t seen you play high world class-tennis since the last three months last in 2006. Also bad in WTA´s championships in Spain. (Lost to Justin H-H.) So.....come on, Maria. Your many fans still likes you so much, when you are a beautiful player at the court. Keep on..and good luck. You needed so much.
