Maria set to make Fed Cup debut for Russia

Maria Sharapova is set to make her Fed Cup debut for Russia next month in Israel, while Venus and Serena Williams will skip the U.S. match against Germany. The fifth-ranked Sharapova leads the Russian team announced Wednesday for the World Group series Feb. 2-3 at Ramat Hasharon.

"I'm so excited about this trip," she said on the Fed Cup website. "It's one of my priorities for this year, along with competing in the Olympics. I'm looking forward to the team experience and visiting Israel for the first time."

Sharapova was selected to Russia's squad for last year's Fed Cup final against Italy in Moscow, but was injured and didn't play in the 4-0 victory.

"I think coming into it, we're going to be expected to win," said Sharapova, who has reached the Australian Open semifinals.

It is hard to imagine the Russian team not being subjected to some physical abuse and rudeness by the heavy-handed security and pat-downs in Israel. I hope they treat their Russian hosts with respect and courtesy which they get over here in the States!

Maria this is the last match and the most difficult but we all hope and pray for you to win it. You did a great job in your previous matches, so stay focused on this one. You proved already that you are able and it's just another match, but take it very seriously. I think you deserve it really because last year it was a letdown, you lost it. but now it's your time to take. And the most important is to play without any pressure and take this chance.
