Wimbledon champion and fourth seed Maria Sharapova overcame a slow start to battle past Italian Silvia Farina Elia 4-6 6-1 6-2 on Sunday to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the first time.



Maria will now play compatriot and fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova after the U.S. Open champion held off another Russian in Vera Douchevina 6-4 6-2.

On Sunday Maria will play 15 seed Silvia Farina Elia of Italia for a place in the quater finals. This match is the third match at Vodafone Arena and the schedule starts at 11.00 local time, which means she won't play before 12.15 PM.



Maria has played Farina Elia only once before at the 2004 Telecom Italia Masters in Rome, and lost 6-7 0-6.

Wimbledon champion and fourth seed Maria Sharapova crushed Chinese hope Li Na 6-0 6-2 on Friday to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open.


Li, 22, was playing in her first grand slam event and was outclassed by her more experienced teenage opponent.



Maria closed out the match after 50 minutes on Rod Laver Arena centre court to become the fifth Russian woman to reach the fourth round.

On Friday evening Maria will play Na Li of China for a place in the fourth round (1/8 final). This match is the first match at Rod Laver Arena and the schedule starts at 19.30 local time (GMT +11).
