Yeah. You know, she's a very dangerous opponent, especially in a first-round match. So I knew what to expect. I played her once before last year. Very aggressive player. Attacked her serve.

Maria Sharapova needed all her battling qualities to reach the third round of the Australian Open on Wednesday, edging out unheralded American Lindsay Lee-Waters 4-6 6-0 6-3.


The fourth-seeded Russian had looked in trouble after dropping the first set but dug deep, hitting eight aces as she recovered to clinch victory in one hour, 47 minutes.


Sharapova admitted she'd been surprised by the form of her opponent.

On wednesday Maria will play American Lindsay Lee-Waters for a place in the third round. This match is the second match at Rod Laver Arena and the schedule starts at 11.00 local time (GMT +11).


Maria has played Lee-Waters once before in exactly the same round at this tournament last year and Maria won 6-1 6-3.

Maria Sharapova has been chosen to become an ambassador for the Moscow bid to host the 2012 Olympics, city officials said on Monday.


"For Moscow to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games would be a dream for me and millions of other Russians," the Siberian-born teenager was quoted as saying by the Moscow bid committee.



"I am looking forward to helping explain why Moscow should host the Games," added the Florida-based Russian.

Maria Sharapova blasted her way into the second round of the Australian Open on Monday with a 6-3 6-1 victory over 15-year-old Bulgarian Sesil Karatantcheva.
The 17-year-old Russian, seeded fourth, crunched 15 winners as she eased to victory in exactly an hour.


Karatantcheva, the world number 110, showed few signs of nerves in just her second grand slam event as she matched Sharapova in the early stages.
