Maria wins battle of the Russians
Posted by: Marco

Fifth seed Maria Sharapova bared her fangs as she downed fellow Russian Elena Vesnina 6-3, 6-0 to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open Friday.

Sharapova was in no mood to tolerate any obstacles in her quest to make amends for a humiliating loss in last year's final, snarling "you're messing with the wrong person" as her opponent refused to buckle early in the match.

A pumped-up Sharapova went on to take the first set in 56 minutes and overpowered Vesnina in the second, muttering darkly to herself between points.

Fifth-ranked Maria Sharapova put an end to new mom Lindsey Davenport's strong comeback, taking a 6-1, 6-3 victory Wednesday to reach the Australian Open third round.

The eagerly awaited match pitted Davenport, who was 19-1 with three titles since returning to the tour, against a former Grand Slam winner for the first time since she took maternity leave to give birth to son Jagger last June.

"From the day I found out, I started working for this game," Sharapova said of the draw. "I approached it like it's a final."

How do you assess your form today as a first‑round match?

MARIA SHARAPOVA:
I played a pretty tricky opponent, someone that I haven't played in a while. You know, the last couple matches that I played in Asia were against pretty big‑hitting girls. So she was definitely a trickier opponent. Also a lefty. You don't see too many of those around these days.

So, you know, I was prepared for it, but I was happy that I was able to follow through.

Maria sets up Davenport clash

Fifth seed Maria Sharapova ground out a 6-4 6-3 win over Croatia's Jelena Kostanic Tosic on Monday to set up a mouth-watering Australian Open second-round clash with former world number one Lindsay Davenport.

Russian Sharapova, losing finalist at Melbourne Park last year, was pushed all the way by an opponent ranked 102nd in the world.

Sharapova, who made 21 unforced errors, broke Tosic's serve early in the first set and twice in the second to seal victory in 88 minutes.
